John Howard – Chairman of the Board

John Howard has over 30 years’ experience in directing biotechnology groups in research, regulatory, production, intellectual property, and business development for two Fortune 500 companies and two start-up companies. In addition to directing a number of technology innovations, he also directed the commercial introduction of the first plant biotechnology products for crop improvement and the first industrial and human health products produced from transgenic plants. He is an author on over 100 publications and patents in biotechnology.  Dr. Howard is the Founder and President of Applied Biotechnology Institute, a company focused on providing early stage research and development for plant biotechnology products targeted to industrial and pharmaceutical markets with minimal risk.

Prior to ABI, Dr. Howard founded ProdiGene, a biotechnology company focused on biopharmaceuticals and industrial products from plants. Before ProdiGene, Dr. Howard was director of Protein Products at Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., where he initiated and developed a program to develop and produce recombinant protein products from plants. From 1987 to 1994, he was director of the Biotechnology Research Department at Pioneer which developed new traits and technology for a variety of crops. He began his career at Stauffer Chemical Company in Richmond, California in 1978 to 1987, where he initiated and directed a biotechnology research program focused mainly on corn and sunflower. Dr. Howard received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Riverside.

Jenny Filbey – CEOJennifer Filbey

Dr. Jennifer Filbey serves as the CEO of Mazen Animal Health. Throughout her career she has focused on new company formation and leadership, business strategy, business development and licensing expertise to companies involved in the life sciences. Her experience encompasses both startup and existing drug delivery / pharmaceutical organizations, transforming the strategic direction to enhance the value of the companies.  Her involvement spans from idea generation to pre-clinical/clinical studies to commercial launch of products. Dr. Filbey brings a demonstrated ability to bridge the science and business to raise capital and bring parties together through deals.

In 2008, Dr. Filbey formed New Perspectives, Inc. to assist companies in the commercialization activities and go-to-market strategy for their products. Prior to New Perspectives  Dr. Filbey served as VP, Business Development at Nektar where she was responsible for transforming the PEG organization from a technology licensing business to a product licensing business with significantly increased revenues. At Nobex Corporation, a start-up biotechnology company focused on the oral delivery of peptides and proteins, as VP of Marketing and Business Development, she was responsible for business development, marketing, legal affairs and program management. Her actions in closing key deals and multiple venture funding rounds, resulted in more than $40 million in private equity and debt capital for this small start-up.

Dr. Filbey has a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Virginia Tech and completed a post-doc at the C.N.R.S. (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Mulhouse, France.

Celine Hayden – Research

Dr. Celine Hayden brings over 15 years of experience in research and development. She heads the vaccine program at Applied Biotechnology Institute where she directs all aspects of research development, preclinical studies, regulatory compliance, and product development for oral vaccine candidates. Dr. Hayden has also been instrumental in developing bioscavenger and other pharmaceutical proteins using ABI’s expression platform.

Dr. Hayden has a PhD in Plant Molecular Genetics from the University of Arizona and completed a post-doc as an NIH IRACDA fellow.

Vicki Morgan – Business & Market DevelopmentVicki Morgan

Vicki Morgan has focused on leading business strategy and partnership initiatives throughout her career. Her business development and licensing experience spans work with various sized companies, ranging from start-up biotechnology to Fortune 200.

Her roles have led to identification of partners, management of the diligence process, term sheet development, and license negotiation of numerous product and technology opportunities.

Experience and Selected Accomplishments

Working with life science company clients over the past 7 years Vicki has provided:

  • Identification and execution of licensing opportunities for the development of therapeutic cancer and infectious disease vaccines in both human and animal health;
  • Deal strategy and execution of drug discovery research collaborations in multiple therapeutic areas;
  • Pipeline strategy for corporate spin-outs;
  • Lead generation, terms development, and license negotiation as a U.S. regional office for international companies.

As Director of Business Development at Nektar Therapeutics she was responsible for licensing activities of Nektar’s first proprietary products in oncology, gastroenterology, and pain therapeutics. In 2006 Ms. Morgan worked with Kimberly-Clark Corporation in the Global Alliances and Technology Acquisition group, responsible for leading strategic partnerships across multiple sectors, including Health Care, Consumer Products, Professional Products and Innovation and Emerging Growth divisions. While with Kimberly Clark, she worked on the in- licensing side of the business to obtain intellectual property licenses, technology access agreements, and sourcing agreements for products and technologies.

In 2000, Vicki joined the drug delivery company, Nobex Corporation where she was responsible for marketing, public relations and licensing activities, including the asset sale of a gastroenterology program to an international biotechnology company, as well as, several funded research programs for a variety of therapeutic areas, such as oncology and inflammatory diseases.

Vicki has an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) and a B.S. degree in Psychology.
